Jon McKay has a broad general corporate commercial practice. He assists domestic and international companies and private equity firms on a wide range of transactional matters, with a focus on mergers and acquisitions, private equity investments, franchise matters and corporate governance. Jon also assists clients with general corporate and securities law matters, including company organization, corporate governance issues and other regulatory compliance issues.
Jon has represented both buyers and sellers in connection with merger and acquisition transactions, including share purchases, asset purchases, plans of arrangement and amalgamations. He acts for private equity firms on the buy side and for clients who are selling their businesses to strategic partners, competitors or private equity firms. For franchisors and franchisees, Jon provides advice on matters relating to franchise structures, compliance with franchise legislation, negotiation and preparation of franchise agreements.
Before becoming an associate at Bennett Jones, Jon summered and articled with the firm. He was also a business immigration Law Clerk for several years, providing support to business travelers entering into Canada and the United States. Prior to pursuing a career in law, Jon explored a number of other business opportunities and was responsible for opening the first out-of-province franchise location for a growing brand in British Columbia. Having not just advised on transactional matters, Jon brings a practical viewpoint to his files and provides his clients with legal solutions and advice that make sense for their business.
