Head of the energy litigation practice group, Bruce Mellett's commercial litigation practice includes experience in energy related disputes, insurance issues, professional liability and construction matters. Among the areas where Bruce has provided advice are contract disputes involving royalty issues, ROFR clauses and product liability issues.

He has extensive experience involving appeal and judicial review cases in the Alberta and Federal Courts, including matters involving aboriginal consultation issues. Bruce has also appeared before the Alberta Utilities Commission and the National Energy Board, and on appeals from these tribunals.

In addition to litigating disputes in the court system, his experience includes arbitration matters involving large insurance and business interruption claims, construction issues, and gas markets issues.

Bruce also provides advice to physicians on medical legal matters including litigation, complaints before the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and fee billing disputes.

Prior to joining Bennett Jones, Bruce served as a law clerk at the Supreme Court of Canada.

Developer in dispute over soil conditions and reporting.
Conducted multiple reviews of insurance liability and indemnity provisions for EPC Agreements for utility and energy companies.
Provided advice on insurance coverage dispute arising from fire at large facility during course of construction.
Owner developer in dispute over geotechnical conditions including year long trial.
Owner in property and business interruption claim in dispute arising from fire at oil sands facility under construction.
Experience in scheduling, cost overrun and lost profit issues.
Energy company obtaining order to remove blockade over public road.
Experience in appellate review of utility regulatory matters including tariff issues, prudency of costs.
Landowner in dispute regarding boundary issues.
Utility in easement dispute.
Pipeline in challenges to approvals and easements in Nova Scotia.
Owner in accelerated arbitration of dispute over exercise of option agreement.
Energy company in an appeal before the Alberta Court of Appeal challenging the particulars award of a chambers judge.
