Alixe Cameron comments in CBC News on how regulation in Alberta is affecting foreign investment in the province’s energy infrastructure.
CBC reports that while the province's regulations are unchanged, there has been a recent reinterpretation of the rules. The result is delays and uncertainty in the purchase of many types of oil, natural gas and electricity facilities by foreign owners.
Alixe says the current situation is having an impact on both foreign and Canadian investment in Alberta's energy industry. "It's definitely on our radar. It is rarely easy, not quick and a very cumbersome process" for deals to be approved. Alixe says that legislation has not changed, "But what has changed is the policies around the legislation and how the Foreign Ownership of Land Administration is interpreting those same regulations. They are taking a much narrower approach."
