Fred Barbieri has over 20 years of experience practising intellectual property law with a focus on creation, prosecution and strategic management of intellectual property assets. He has prosecuted patent and industrial design applications in many technology subject matter areas pertaining to the software and wireless telecommunications industries, including artificial intelligence, fintech, IoT, cybersecurity, autonomous vehicles and agriTech hardware and software. Fred is a registered patent agent in both Canada and the United States.
As in-house counsel at a major wireless telecommunications company, Fred strategically managed global patent portfolios, advised on inventor assignments and formal documents, advised on IP provisions in employment and commercial agreements, participated in IP due diligence for acquired companies, prepared claim charts, and actively mined for new inventions within the company. Fred also has experience in all areas of patent, trademark and industrial design prosecution, preparing patentability, validity and infringement opinions, preparing freedom to operate analyses, preparing claim charts and providing litigation support.
Fred is Assistant Secretary General of AIPPI (International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property), Past-President of AIPPI Canada, and a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada.
