Doug Fenton is a skilled advocate focused on complex, high-stakes litigation. His practice broadly includes corporate and commercial disputes, securities litigation and regulation, shareholder activism, bankruptcy and insolvency matters, fraud, defamation, constitutional litigation and class actions. Clients value Doug's oral advocacy, sound judgment, strategic approach and strong work ethic. He invests the time necessary to understand his clients' business and objectives, targeting the most efficient resolution, whether through negotiated settlement or vigorous representation in court.

Doug has extensive experience before all levels of court in Ontario, including the Commercial List and the Court of Appeal for Ontario. He has also acted as counsel in matters before the courts across Canada, including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon, the Federal Court of Canada and the Federal Court of Appeal, as well as before various regulatory bodies.

He regularly handles complex cross-border disputes, coordinating closely with counsel and service providers in jurisdictions such as the United States, Mexico, Dubai, the Caribbean and Europe.

Doug’s practice also includes a substantial focus on appellate matters, where he has handled a wide range of appeals on corporate and commercial law, constitutional law and bankruptcy and insolvency issues. He leverages deep legal knowledge to develop winning appellate arguments.

A fierce advocate, Doug is also adept at providing measured advice to mitigate or avoid litigation. He advises Boards of Directors and Special Committees on corporate governance and risk management and has considerable experience conducting internal investigations and managing responses to agency inquiries.

During law school, Doug earned multiple academic awards, including course prizes in contracts, administrative law and securities litigation. He was recognized for his oral advocacy in corporate/securities litigation and criminal law. His academic work has been published in the Canadian Business Law Journal and cited by the Supreme Court of Canada.

Doug rejoined Bennett Jones as an associate after clerking at the Court of Appeal for Ontario, where he worked for Associate Chief Justice Hoy, Justice Nordheimer and Justice Harvison Young. Prior to his clerkship, Doug summered and articled at the firm.
