We are currently recruiting for the following role in our Toronto office:

Specialist, Trust Accounting

This role involves collaborating with members of the trust accounting team in all locations. It also requires frequent communication with financial institutions and internal stakeholders, including lawyers, paralegals, and legal assistants, to ensure the accuracy of trust transactions. The position necessitates developing and maintaining a thorough understanding of provincial Law Society rules regarding trust funds. Additionally, the role involves adhering to established processes and controls to comply with these rules and other internal safeguards designed to protect trust monies.

Essential Functions:

  • Reconcile daily and monthly trust bank account activity
  • Making deposits, arranging for bank wires, cheques, and investments, and all associated trust administration
  • Processing trust investment transactions
  • Prepare rush cheques/wires and obtain authorizing signatures as required
  • Process trust deposits, including scanning cheques into the banking system
  • Use online banking platforms to initiate wire transfers for Trust transactions
  • Adhering to provincial Law Society rules and Bennett Jones internal policies and procedures including cost control
  • Provide cross-coverage for other trust specialists across the country
  • Obtain required signatures and approvals for trust transactions
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Trust experience of at least 2 years is an asset
  • Proficient with Accounting software as well as Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience using Aderant is an asset
  • Ability to multi-task, strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to multitask and work well under pressure in a high-volume environment
  • Energetic and positive attitude
  • Ability to communicate effectively with external vendors and internal staff
  • Law firm experience and knowledge of the Law Society bylaws relating to trust or Professional Services experience is an asset
  • Demonstrates good judgment and professionalism
  • Capacity to work independently and autonomously, as well as in a team environment
  • Ability to handle conflicting and changing priorities in a positive manner
